If salespeople cannot explain their products with a convincing sales pitch, then fewer people would buy their products. This is also true for nurses, doctors, firemen, police personnel and other professions. Even employees of General Motors meet regularly to make group decisions that they will present formally to management.

Improve Public Speaking by Using the "Columbo Technique"...

There must be a lot of managers out there who find it difficult to speak in public, either at some convention, sales meeting or presentation or just in front of a hand full of colleagues. Here's a very simple technique I learned many years ago that will drive the point home very very effectively.

At the time I had no idea that it was called the 'Columbo Technique'. Many of you might remember that cigar smoking detective on a 70's police series called Columbo which ran for many many years. He was very soft spoken and polite and he had one trait which always got people thinking. He would ask his questions and then he would leave but just before he gets to the door, he turns around and says, "Oh...just one more thing." This can work very well in public speaking. Here's how you do it.

Save your most important point till last. Use this technique just before a major transition in your presentation. You could say something like, "that's all on that topic...(pause for a few seconds) oh, and one more thing...." then start with the most important point you want to make. This will have two effects on the audience. One is that for those who have wandered off in their heads, when you say that it will bring them back instantly and two, you will have your audiences full attention. A word of caution though.

Don't use this technique just before taking a break by saying something like, "Before we take a break there's one more thing." When people hear the word 'break' they will automatically switch off and start shuffling their papers and get ready to go and if that happens, you will have lost them. Placing this technique just in the right place of your presentation in critical to its success. One of the best places is at the end of your presentation because when you come back to the main point using this technique, people are more likely to remember it.

The more you practice this, the better at t you will get and the more comfortable you will be using it. However, don't over do its use. Use it only once in your presentation as its meant to be an attention grabber and not a transitional phrase.

Improve Public Speaking By Speaking With Passion

As a communication coach, I'm jazzed to read bold statements about people speaking with passion. But, look out folks... passion can also leave 3rd degree burns.

Expressing your passion is like playing with fire. You've got to know exactly what you want to ignite. If it's done aimlessly, it'll soon be out of control and you'll end up burning yourself and others out.

It's been said that the voice is the transmitter of the soul. What you think of as passion might actually be coming across as an intense emotion like anger. We see it in others, but not always in ourselves.

My first paid speech was to the University of Washington. I was totally passionate about the topic. Looking back on it though, there was an uneasy sense of urgency in my voice. Some might even say -- scary. It was a tough lesson that taught me how unchecked passion can turn people off. Now I can easily tell when a speaker is coming from a place of frustration versus vision.

Your supporters are more influenced by the tone of your voice than the words you say.

You know this from your own experience but if you want documented research, Google the studies done by Professor Albert Mehrabian.

Know your audience. Take into account their current emotional level. If they're on the low end of the emotional scale (apathetic or afraid), an angry voice, which is a higher vibration will actually give them a lift and make them feel more alive. If they're living at an emotionally high vibration already, like happy or peaceful, an angry voice will be a step down for them. When your audience is living in a higher vibe, they'll be listening for the joy and vision in your voice. If you have it, they'll tune in.

For many people, being a public speaker can be a terrifying prospect. If you are one of these people and have found that you are faced with a speaking engagement you just can't avoid, here are some tips to help you pull off an engaging speech.

* Know your audience

First and foremost, it is important as a public speaker to know whom you are addressing. You might present a certain subject matter to students differently than you would that same subject matter to seniors. The more you tailor your presentation to your audience, the more likely it is that they will connect with you and respond positively to what you are saying.

* Dress for success

This also ties in to knowing your audience and where you will be giving your presentation. Wear clothing appropriate to the occasion but make sure it is something you are comfortable in so you and your audience are not distracted while you fidget or fuss with your clothes.

* The unspoken part of speaking

Your body language can speak volumes to your audience. If you stand stiffly behind a podium with your head down as you read your speech, your audience will be as uncomfortable as you appear to be. The point of your presentation is to engage their attention and share your passion for your subject. Moving with ease on the stage, using your hands and gesturing where it is appropriate will make them more comfortable too. Nothing is harder to watch than a public speaker with hands white-knuckled on the podium, reading rapidly through his or her notes.
The more at ease you are, the more at ease your audience will be too.

* Pace yourself

In preparing for a presentation, it is a good idea to practice enough not to need to read from notes. Timing yourself will also help you to know if you're going too fast or too slow. A nice easy pace to a speech - one that is neither too fast nor too slow - will hold the attention of the audience more than a rushed speech or one that wanders all over the place.

* Make them laugh

Using appropriate humor within the context of your speech can also be a good way to connect with your audience. Make sure that your humor is appropriate to your subject matter and audience. You don't want to turn people off by using humor that they may find distasteful. But breaking the ice with a humorous lead-in story or sprinkling humor throughout your presentation can grab hold of your audience and keep them attentive.

Without a doubt, being prepared is the best way to prevent a disastrous presentation for a public speaker. If you have handouts to give the audience, have them ready and distribute them when it's appropriate. If you're using any type of media, make sure you're there far enough ahead of time to test it and make sure that it works as it should.

Most of all, know your subject matter. Speak on something you're passionate about because your passion will be catching. The more comfortable you are with your topic, the easier it will be to speak on. As a public speaker you want to connect with your audience and draw them in. Using your enthusiasm for a subject is the best way to do that.
